Devotional Thought on 1 Thessalonians 5:21-22
Title: The Call to Daily Discernment
"Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. Abstain from all appearance of evil."
Decision-making is so important. Many times we respond or act too quickly causing a domino effect leading to tense relationships, questioned integrity, or possible disciplinary consequences. God’s Word has a lot to say about discernment and the task of evaluating and testing things in our lives to make sure they are in line with what He expects from us as believers.
This passage starts with many exhortations and instructions on dealing with people, our actions and mindsets, and our responses to difficult scenarios. After these short verses that encapsulate the whole book leading to this moment Paul says to “Prove all things” or rather to “Test all things.” Everything in our lives needs to be evaluated. There is nothing in our lives that should not be put under the microscope of God’s Word to see if it is pleasing to God. “All things” means all things. It means what we watch, what we listen to, what we say, how we interact with our friends, how we achieve our grades, how we compete, and many others. It means everything we do needs to be with the mindset of discerning if it is right or wrong. There may also be decisions we face that both are not intrinsically bad but one is better than the other. Deciding which course of action is best.
Paul finishes with two effects of “testing all things” which include holding to that which is good and denying/forbidding anything that is wicked into our lives whether it is a thought, action, or word. This conclusion says application is crucial. You may know what is wrong but until you put it into practice it is useless. Make discernment an everyday practice. Put God’s Word and pleasing God as the most important thing.
