Expectations of Music Students

Band

  • Students in band will be expected to practice their band music at least THIRTY MINUTES outside of band time each week. This means your instrument (or practice pad, as needed) should go home with you after band on Mondays!

  • If you are struggling to play your music after three weeks of having had it in band, you will be required to stay after school one day each week for a private music lesson with Miss DuBois. Avoid this hassle—practice on your own! Good practice means

  • you correct your mistakes (instead of continuing to play them)

  • you play it through multiple times, in sections, as needed.

    • play the whole piece, making note of measures to go back and work on

    • go back to those measure ONLY and practice slowly, at least 5 times through

    • then put the piece back together.

  • you do NOT have to play it perfectly, but do not practice mistakes into the piece

  • Your grade is based on your attendance to band, having your instrument, and having your music. Because band ONLY MEETS ONE DAY PER WEEK, failure to have your instrument or music with you on Mondays will result in a demerit for being unprepared and 5 points off of your grade for the day.

  • Attendance at our 5 performances for the year counts as a test grade for band. Please inform Miss DuBois at least a week in advance if you know you’ll miss a performance (don’t schedule vacations then, please!), or as early as possible if you become sick before a performance. Students who miss a performance without informing us of their absence will receive a ZERO for that performance.

Choir

  • Students in choir will be expected to listen to any posted or emailed/texted practice tracks. Please know your music and be prepared to sing it each week!

  • Students are expected to be quiet when Miss DuBois is giving instruction and prepared to sing at all times. Lack of respect will not be tolerated.

  • Your grade is based on your attendance to choir, your behavior in choir, and having your music for choir. Failure to be quiet during instruction, to sing your best, or to have your music will result in demerits and 5 points off of your grade for each occurrence.

Handbells

  • This elite group will only meet on Wednesdays from 3:25-4:00pm. Students should be ON TIME and ready to play AT 3:25—not using the restroom, not having a snack, not hanging out in any other part of the building.
