In the modern age of video games, texting, and television, students who enjoy reading are hard to find. Indiana Christian Academy of Anderson recently hosted the “Month of the Reader” throughout the month of February to encourage students to get into books and broaden their horizons. Children in grades 1 through 8 participated in this reading campaign, with 56 students (80% of those grades) working towards the goal of reading the most pages for their grade level within a month.
“It was so exciting to see our students bringing in some classic books, as well as some new favorites to read in their free time,” said Miss Sherry DuBois, secondary English teacher. “Reading seems to be a lost love among today’s students, and I believe this really opened the eyes of many students! They saw that reading can be fun, as well as rewarding. I’ve still got students bringing in books, using their free time to enrich their minds and hearts. I’m so thankful we did this!”
The overall winners were Sydney Tipton, 1st grade, with 1,826 pages, Pierson Plew, 3rd grade, with 3,393 pages, Preslie Plew, 6th grade, with 2,725 pages, and Abby DeLong, 7th grade, with 2,994 pages. Other notable readers were Jackson Arnett, 592, Hannah Volbrecht, 568, Isaac Volbrecht, 2,760, Curtis Henson, 2,512, Abby Plew, 2,286, Madison Edgreen, 2,150, Nikki Campbell, 2,106, and Vincent Owen, 1,202. These students were from 1-7 grades, respectively, and helped achieve a school total of 48,796 pages read! Congratulations, students! For more information about ICA call 765-643-7884.
